05-01 Transgender Athletes
Q 1. Should transgender athletes be able to compete with the gender that they feel is appropriate for their gender identity? Do these athletes have an unfair advantage due to their biology?
The International Olympic Committee has given the permission to transgender athletes to take part in the Olympics games “under the gender with which they identify”. The revised guidelines of 2015 instructed them to keep a check on their testosterone level and need not give any legal recognition of which gender they belong. Now answering the question , I would say that only feeling appropriate will not do, there has to be some written or legal proceeding there by the transgender athlete agrees to keep the testosterone level low and they must take part in that gender “with which they identify” and not “that they feel is appropriate”.
